(VEN) - The energy conservation program and projects have received active support from individual and corporate customers in Can Tho City and improved people's consciousness. Can Tho City has conserved more than 9.5 million kWh so far the year.
The energy efficiency and conservation program has been underway in Can Tho city from 2006-2010, according to the city's Department of Industry and Trade. Accordingly, the department has joined hands with relevant state organizations to launch the energy efficiency and conservation movement in the community, inspected energy consumption in major businesses, and hosted a number of workshops to present energy efficient solutions and equipment for use in production and public lighting. Consequently, the city conserved more than 23.7 million kWh in 2008, over 10 million kWh in 2009 and around 9.5 million kWh in the first half of 2010.
The deputy director of Can Tho City Department of Industry and Trade and director of the city's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Center, Duong Nghia Hiep said the Can Tho People's Committee set up the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Center belonging to the Department of Industry and Trade and urged both the center and the department to take strong measures to conserve energy. Accordingly, the center has carried out many activities: using central budget capital to implement an energy conservation project in Can Tho City that is managed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and cooperating with several southern provinces on energy conservation through ANNEP II Project that support the execution of national energy policies in several southern cities and provinces (the project is financed by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Office under the Ministry of Industry and Trade and several other organizations). Besides, efforts were made to uphold individuals and organizations in utilizing energy efficiency equipment and technologies such as compact lamps or solar water heaters.
The energy efficiency and conservation project in Can Tho City took place for eight months (from November 2009 to June 2010) at a total cost of VND400 million taken from the central budget. Under the project, the city's Center for Energy Efficiency and Conservation made surveys and collected data from businesses and state organizations in the city to draw assessments about energy consumption and conservation situation. From there, efforts were made to establish Can Tho City's action program on energy efficiency and conservation, host training courses and seminars to favor business managers and staff in charge of energy monitoring in 50 city-based businesses. Also, five selected businesses were supported in energy audits and finding suitable energy conservation solutions. Steps were taken to procure data, make analyses, launch diverse measure groups on energy efficiency and conservation in the city and increase propagation through the media.
The ANNEP II Project, funded by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Office, Dong Nai Department of Science and Technology and ADEME, will last from December 2009 to April 2012. The project involves a number of southern provinces and municipalities already having energy efficiency and conservation centers such as Can Tho City, Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces, etc. Under the project, the staff responsible for energy efficiency and conservation in Can Tho City, organizations and individuals will have a chance to exchange experiences, attend the training courses and be assisted in establishing investment reports and energy management systems, etc.
For successful implementation of the targets set forth by the National Program on Energy Efficiency and Conservation, the Can Tho Energy Efficiency and Conservation Center will increase propagation about measures to conserve energy to local people. Besides, the center will make the most of diverse aid sources and take measures to support organizations, businesses and individuals in the area. Besides, it also requires the producers and traders of energy efficient equipment and technologies (compact lamps, wind turbines, solar water heaters, etc.) to sell their products in the city at competitive prices.
In 2010, the Can Tho Department of Industry and Trade is set to enhance management, train human resources on energy efficiency and conservation, establish energy management system, cooperate with the National Office for Energy Efficiency and Conservation, universities and diverse energy efficiency and conservation centers to tackle the projects and programs in this field. The main objective is to reduce five percent of energy consumption in the city in the next five years./.
