(VEN) - The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Vietnam and the Quang Ngai Province People's Committee concluded an agreement on August 10 in Hanoi, regarding Japanese US$7.8 million assistance for the project to recover small reservoirs in Quang Ngai.
JICA said that there are about 110 small reservoirs in the province, most of which are substandard. For this reason, farmers are facing water shortages and dam-break risks.
The project is expected to contribute to increasing agricultural productivity by ensuring sufficient, stable sources of water for 846ha of cultivation land of almost 4,000 farming households in the communes of Binh Nguyen, Binh Thanh, Duc Phu, Pho Ninh and Pho Cuong in three project-site provinces. The project will also secure the local community by reducing dam-break risks.
New reservoirs will meet Japanese and Vietnamese design/construction standard.
The project will take place from January 2011 to October 2012./.
