(VEN) - The Secretariat for the Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation Forum (MDEC) said that Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung concluded Decision 388/QD-TTg on March 25, regarding the organization of MDEC as an annual event.
MDEC is to increase cooperation and connection between centrally controlled provinces and cities in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta and between the delta and the rest of the country to make most of economic potentials in the region.
MDEC Steering Committee members include representatives of the Southwest Steering Committee, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the National Committee for International Economic Cooperation, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism, the Government Office and provinces/cities in the region.
The MDEC Steering Committee meeting will be held annually to make the highest decisions within the framework of MDEC, regarding the enforcement of MDEC's proposals adopted annually by the Prime Minister, direction and adoption of action programs within the framework of annual MDEC and other fields of cooperation.
Budget for annual MDEC activities will come from the State and other eligible sources.
This year MDEC will probably be held in June in Kien Giang province under the theme, "Making Most of River/Sea Advantages and Developing Sustainable Economy in the Mekong Delta". Particularly, Ho Chi Minh City will help organize the Mekong Delta Week, which will take place in the city in June 2010 as part of the master plan to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi.
MDEC was held annually in the last three years under the themes, "Mekong Delta Economy: WTO's Impacts" in 2007, "For the Development of Transport Infrastructure" in 2008 and "Cooperation for Mekong Delta Human Resources Development in Time of Integration" in 2009./.
