MDEC To Make Most of Mekong Delta

(VEN) - The Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation Forum (MDEC) 2010 on the theme of "Developing advantage of sea and rivers for Mekong Delta strong economic development" held in Ho Chi Minh City and Kien Giang will officially start with the Seminar on Solutions to Strongly Develop Mekong Delta Agriculture on April 21, 2010 and finish with the Leader Conference on June 25, 2010.

 
Kien Giang is a coastal province which has the richest potential for sea economic development in the Mekong Delta. In particular, Phu Quoc Island is under a project to be developed into a special administrative zone and international ecological tourism zone by 2030. Kien Giang Province is located in a region full of tourism potential. Famous places such as Sentosa (Singapore), Tiomam, Petaling Jaya, Redang, Langkawi (Malaysia), Narathiwat, Pattni, Songkha, Nakhon sri Thamarai, Samui, Huabin, Pattaya, Trat, Chanthburi (Thailand), Kokong, Kompomxom, Prongkep (Cambodia), Phu Quoc (Kien Giang) and the Mekong Delta are attracting millions of tourists every year from all over the world. The initiative of sea, island and river tourism cooperation among Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand was proposed. Nevertheless, the countries in Mekong Sub-region are facing numerous challenges. Salt-marsh area is increasing. According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in all the provinces of Mekong Delta, sea water is deeply infiltrating into the mainland. Sea water infiltration along with drought causes severe deficiency of fresh water for the region. Hence, besides utilizing available advantages, finding solutions to these difficulties are the priorities of the Mekong Delta provinces and countries.
In response, MDEC Kien Giang 2010 is being held to gather opinions of domestic and international scientists, organizations, businesses and related central and local managers. They will discuss the advantages and disadvantages facing the Mekong Delta, propose solutions to cope with climate changes and develop a environmentally friendly agricultural and tourism economy for the region. The Forum is also a place to make the common voice of scientists, managers, international organizations, countries being under the influence of climate change, make reasonable investment and commerce promotion programs among provinces and nations, discuss initiatives to develop Mekong Delta Sea-Island-River Tourism Program among Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia with Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
The MDEC Kien Giang 2010 includes a series of activities held from April to June, 2010 such as the Seminar on Developing Advantage of Sea and Rivers for Mekong Delta Strong Agricultural Economy, the Seminar on Cooperating to Develop Mekong Delta Sea-Island-River Tourism, Mekong Delta Week, International Seminar on Solutions to Cope with Climate Change in The Mekong Delta, the promotion programs of trade-investment-tourism, the Ceremony Honoring Organizations and Individuals Contributing to The Mekong Delta Firm Development and the Leader Conference of relevant ministries and authorities, the People's Committee of HCMC and of Mekong Delta cities and provinces; relevant chambers, departments in Mekong Delta region and Ho Chi Minh City.
Hosting the MDEC 2010 creates a golden opportunity for Kien Giang Province to enhance investment attraction, comprehensively and stably economic development basing on utilizing sea and island advantages./.
