(VEN) - A workshop was held recently in the city of Can Tho under the direction of the Southwestern Steering Committee, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, and the Central Institute of Economic Management.
Under the theme, "Building Special Policies To Attract Investment in the Mekong Delta", the workshop presented standpoints on building special mechanisms and policies to attract investment in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta focusing on sustainable and quality development, the comprehensiveness of the policy system, the connection with regions in the country and the world, the certainty of the market mechanism, and investors' self-determination.
The Central Institute of Economic Management has developed a project to make special policies to attract investment in the Mekong Delta, based on the survey of actual investment in the delta in recent years. The goal for the project is to evaluate the potential of the delta and its disadvantages in increasing and fostering investment.
The economy in the delta grew an average of 7.7 percent annually in 2001-2005 and 7.5 percent annually in 2006-2010. However, infrastructure, human resources and business support services are major barriers for the delta in attracting investment.
The delta also has great potential for the development of agriculture and fishery. However, it has not made the most of the potential to generate high economic value. Many regional development plans do not match the practice./.
